Marlins Battle Washington College to Double-Overtime Thriller

The Batten University field hockey team battled Washington College through more than 72 minutes of action on Saturday, ultimately falling 3-2 in double overtime. The Marlins erased an early deficit with two second-quarter goals and carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime before Washington College tied the contest in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winner at 72:26.

Landry Meyer led the offense as she tallied a goal and an assist, while Kellyn McCloud scored a goal for the Marlins.

Berkley Miller delivered a strong performance in goal, as she played all 72:26 minutes, had four saves, and allowed three goals.

Washington College opened the scoring at the 10:40 mark on a goal from Sophia Warner, taking a 1-0 advantage after the opening quarter. The Marlins responded aggressively in the second, generating six penalty corners and five shots. Katherine Druiett forced back-to-back saves early in the period before McCloud converted Batten's pressure into the equalizer.

Just under six minutes later, Batten struck again. Padilla had her initial attempt saved following a penalty corner, but Meyer found the back of the cage at 26:03 to put the Marlins ahead 2-1. Batten took that advantage into halftime after holding Washington College without a shot in the second quarter.

Washington College increased its pressure after halftime, recording five shots and four penalty corners in the third quarter, but Miller and the Marlins' defense kept the Shorewomen off the board. Regan Wells also recorded a defensive save earlier in the contest as Batten worked to protect its advantage.

The Shorewomen eventually tied the game at 2-2 when Natalie Watkinson scored off a penalty corner at 51:57, sending the contest to overtime. Miller came up with another important stop at 67:27 in the first overtime to extend the game, while neither side could break through during the opening extra period.

Batten nearly ended the contest in the second overtime when Meyer put a shot on goal at 71:17, but Washington College goalkeeper Charlotte Schurman made the save. Just over a minute later, Warner scored her second goal of the game at 72:26 to give Washington College the 3-2 double-overtime victory. The Marlins finished with seven shots, all seven on goal, and six penalty corners in the contest.
