Erik Johnson joins the Batten University men's basketball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach, bringing more than two decades of coaching and education experience to the Marlins.
Johnson most recently served as the head boys basketball coach at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, from 2019-26. During his tenure, he oversaw all aspects of the program, including offseason workouts, player development and community outreach initiatives. Eight players from his program went on to play college basketball, while all seniors graduated during his tenure.
Prior to Grassfield, Johnson served as the head boys basketball coach at Windsor High School from 2017-19 and Poquoson High School from 2013-17. At Poquoson, he oversaw the varsity program, created and implemented offseason workouts, and helped the team earn its first home playoff game in five years. He also previously served as the school's junior varsity boys basketball coach.
Johnson's coaching experience also includes a stint as the boys and girls varsity cross country head coach at Lakeland High School, as well as earlier experience coaching girls basketball in New York. As an assistant at Honeoye High School in 2005-06, he helped guide the program to a Section 5 Championship and New York State West Championship while advancing to the state tournament championship game.
In addition to his coaching career, Johnson has more than 20 years of experience as a physical education teacher. He has taught at Creekside Elementary School, Carrsville Elementary School, and Grassfield High School, where he has taught physical education, health, weight room, and adapted physical education courses. He was named Rookie Teacher of the Year during his time at Creekside Elementary.
Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in physical education studies from SUNY Cortland in 2006 after earning an associate degree in physical education studies from Monroe Community College in 2003.
