Jamaal Matin-Abdul joins the Batten University men's basketball coaching staff following a pair of graduate assistant positions at the University of Central Missouri and the University of Mount Olive.
Matin-Abdul most recently served as a graduate assistant at Central Missouri during the 2025-26 season, contributing to defensive strategy, player development, scouting and opponent preparation. He assisted with scouting reports, film breakdown and identifying opponent tendencies while also contributing to recruiting efforts throughout the Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma areas. Central Missouri finished the season with a 24-10 record, improving from 15-15 the previous season, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32.
Prior to Central Missouri, Matin-Abdul spent the 2024-25 season as a graduate assistant at Mount Olive, where he was involved in recruiting, individual and team practices, skill development, film review, scouting, video exchange and team travel. He also helped coordinate facility needs and other day-to-day operations of the program.
Matin-Abdul began his coaching career at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, serving as the school's junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant from 2022-24. As JV head coach, he led the program to a 20-3 record over two seasons while helping develop players who advanced to the varsity level and earned all-state honors. As a varsity assistant, he helped Green Run capture back-to-back Class 5A Regional Championships and coached three First-Team All-State selections. The program went on to win a state championship.
A former standout collegiate player at Mount Olive, Matin-Abdul was a four-year starter from 2014-19. He is the only player in Conference Carolinas history to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons, accomplishing the feat in 2018 and 2019. He was a three-time All-Conference selection, reached the 1,000-point milestone and was a member of Mount Olive's 2014-15 NCAA Division II Elite Eight team. He also holds the Mount Olive record for most three-pointers made in a single game with 10.
Matin-Abdul earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Mount Olive in 2019, with a minor in coaching and sport psychology. He is pursuing a master's degree in business administration.
In addition to his collegiate and high school coaching experience, Matin-Abdul has extensive experience working with youth athletes through basketball camps, including camps at Mount Olive, Virginia Beach Fieldhouse, Nike Basketball and Campbell University.
