A 1994 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College, John DeCandido has deep ties to the Marlins men’s basketball program. A four-year starter during his collegiate career, DeCandido helped lead the Marlins to the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Championship in program history. That historic season culminated in the Marlins’ first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance as a member of the ODAC.

Before joining the Marlins, DeCandido starred at Lakeland High School in New York, where he established himself as one of the region’s top players. As a senior, he was recognized among the Top 50 basketball players in the state of New York. He also set school records for single-season points per game, three-point field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage.

Following his playing career, DeCandido transitioned into coaching and sports media. His coaching career spans more than 20 years across multiple levels of basketball. He has also worked in sports radio with nationally syndicated networks, including Sports Fan Radio Network, ESPN Radio, CBS Sports/Westwood One and Fox Sports Radio.

DeCandido resides in Virginia Beach with his wife of 25 years, Kary, a fellow Marlins graduate. The couple has two children, Madison and Riley.
