The No.22 ranked Batten University women's volleyball team (4-0) snagged two wins today in dominant fashion including a 3-0 win over Wisc. La-Crosse, winning 25-15, 25-23, and 26-24, and defeated SUNY New Paltz 25-11, 25-17, and 25-8.
Game One:
The Marlins offense was led by
Hannah Smith who tallied 23 kills, with a .452 hitting percentage, 15 digs, four service aces, and one assist.
Anna Moody registered 10 kills, with a .444 hitting percentage, three digs, and one block assist.
Elizabeth York had six kills, with two block assists, and two digs.
Niya Nash led the team with 22 assists, five digs, and one service ace, and teammate
Brenna Raymond tallied 17 digs, and five assists.
Batten came out hot, jumping out to a 12-4 lead in the first set of the match and continued their good run of play to extend the lead to 16-6. The Eagles fought back and was able to cut the lead to 21-15, but the Marlins went on to win the set 25-15.
Wisc. La-Crosse came out well to start set two after building a narrow 7-6 lead, but the Marlins went on a 5-1 run to hold an 11-8 lead. The Eagles responded with a 7-1 run to retake the lead at 15-12. However, Batten didn't give up as they responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 16-16. The Eagles were able to sustain their lead until at the 21-18 mark, when Batten went on a 7-2 run to win the second set 25-23.
In the third set, the Eagles came out hot, holding a 9-1 lead early in the set. However, the Marlins went on a torrid 13-5 run to tie the set at 14-14, and continued their good run of play to increase their lead to 19-17. The Eagles fought back to gain momentum as they managed to go on a run and lead 24-22, but Batten rallied and scored four unanswered points to win set three 26-24.
Game Two:
Anna Moody led the team against New Paltz as she had nine kills, a .636 hitting percentage, and one dig.
Hannah Smith had seven kills, one assist, one service ace, and eight digs.
Abbey Samples recorded five kills, with a .333 hitting percentage, and one dig.
Niya Nash led the team with 24 assists and had five digs, and libero teammate
Brenna Raymond had 11 digs, three assists, and two service aces.
Batten opened the match in dominant fashion, taking control early and never allowing New Paltz to settle into the opening set. The Marlins recorded 16 kills on 33 attacks while committing just four errors for a .364 hitting percentage. New Paltz was held to just two kills and a -.125 hitting percentage as Batten rolled to a 25-11 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
New Paltz challenged the Marlins early in the second set, which featured five ties and two lead changes. Batten eventually gained separation and maintained control down the stretch, putting away 12 kills in the frame. The Marlins limited the Hawks to five kills and closed out the set 25-17 to move within one set of the sweep.
The Marlins left little doubt in the third set, jumping in front and controlling the frame from start to finish with no ties or lead changes. Batten returned to its efficient offensive form with 15 kills and just three errors on 33 attacks for a .364 hitting percentage, while New Paltz managed only four kills. The Marlins cruised to a 25-8 win to complete the 3-0 sweep and improve to 4-0 on the season.
